The Intergovernmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is a global body bringing together hundreds of scientists, experts, Indigenous Peoples and governments to assess the state of nature.
IPBES is the science-policy interface for the Convention on Biological Diversity (and other conventions), helping to ensure that policies are evidence-based.
IPBES provides governments with objective, scientifically credible assessments of the state of knowledge on biodiversity and ecosystem services to aid in the negotiations.
It also works with all stakeholders in the conventions to promote effective engagement in their work, and does the same job as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) but for biodiversity!
IPBES Assessments
IPBES publishes assessments on key biodiversity and ecosystem services issues, offering a critical evaluation of the state of knowledge by independent experts interacting with government representatives and other stakeholders.

The next assessment, which will be finalised at their next meeting, IPBES-12, is called ‘Business and Biodiversity’.

For each of the new IPBES reports a plenary is held in which all country members come together to confirm the final text. The 12th plenary session, IPBES-12, took place in Manchester in February 2026 where the text for the Business and Biodiversity Assessment will be finalised.
At IPBES-12, member governments agreed on the text of the new Business and Biodiversity Assessment. You can find out more about the assessment in our social media post below and follow this link to read the summary for policy makers.
